In October, The York Ghost Merchants and Bettys proudly brought together heritage and craftmanship to create a trio of chocolate ghosts – handcrafted with care from the finest, perfectly tempered, delicious Swiss chocolate.

Ghosts are an integral, yet undeniably obscure part of York’s story. Through Bettys time-honoured artistry, the iconic York Ghosts took on a new form. Cast in the finest Swiss chocolate, each ghost was handcrafted with a commitment to deliciousness, and every chocolate ghost was unique, with a spirit all of its own.

Our first batch was available exclusively in Bettys York and to order on Bettys.co.uk from Wednesday 1^st October. Many thanks to the customers who snapped up our ghosts in this first-of-its-kind collaboration.

Who are the York Ghost Merchants?

Tucked away on York’s historic Shambles, the York Ghost Merchants have become a phenomenon, drawing thousands of visitors who queue for hours just to step inside.

They make and sell ghost figures using traditional materials and techniques passed down through generations of craftspeople. No two ghosts are alike, and is stamped with a maker’s mark to certify its authenticity.

Between their two shops and a website where special editions called ‘Black Box Ghosts’ are released without warning and often sell out instantly, they’ve built a dedicated global following.

A large part of their popularity is in the storytelling and shopping experience, which includes staff dressed in Victorian clothing, creaking floorboards, secret ghosts tucked behind portraits and whimsical backstories to their limited-edition ghosts.
