Sustainability
Congratulations on your ten-year anniversary! Can you tell us a bit more about how you first started working at Bettys & Taylors?
I can’t believe how quickly the time has flown! When I took my first seasonal job with Bettys all those years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined that I’d work across such a range of different areas in the business. But that first stint in Bettys had a big impact on me. I loved the enthusiasm and team spirit in the Harrogate branch and I asked if there were any permanent roles that I could apply for. Unfortunately, nothing was available at that time but shortly after I left, an opportunity came up as a Retail Assistant in Bettys Harrogate and I was delighted when I was offered the job. I haven’t looked back since!
What did you enjoy about working in Bettys?
I had the pleasure of working in both the Harrogate and Harlow Carr branches and one of my favourite things is the energy and the interaction with a wide variety of people, as well as the beautiful settings of our Café Tea Rooms. I feel that Bettys really does offer something magical. When you’re part of a Bettys team, you’re the face of the business and you have a fundamental role in making each customer’s experience special and memorable. So my experience as a Retail Assistant and then as a waitress allowed me to develop my customer service skills to the highest level, with a strong attention to detail and a proactive approach.
How did you transfer from Bettys into a Taylors Production role?
In 2019 I felt ready for a new challenge, but I was keen to stay within the Bettys & Taylors business. When I saw a Production Technician vacancy at Taylors, I was curious to learn more. So I did some research on what the job required and could see that many of my existing skills would be transferable so I decided to apply and I started in my new role in June 2019.
I have to say, my first day was absolutely mind blowing! There was so much to take in but the team and my manager were really supportive and I felt very welcomed. In terms of machinery, you’re given plenty of training, and I was also very determined and keen to learn, so that made the transition easier.
Six months after becoming a Production Technician, I progressed into a Cell Leader role, which meant I took on some people management responsibilities which I enjoyed and that led to my next step up in 2022 as a Duty Manager.
What are some of the key skills you need in your current role?
I’m definitely a people person and although my current job in manufacturing is very different to where I started in hospitality, teamwork is a vital part of the day-to-day job.
I’m responsible for a team of 25 people and it’s important to me that everyone feels supported and motivated to do the best job they can and achieve their goals, so relationship management and good communication is a key part of that.
"Every day is different so you also need to be adaptable and enjoy problem solving. Sometimes that means you have to stretch yourself or manage unexpected challenges, but we have a very collaborative approach here, and I especially enjoy working with teams and departments from across the business to ensure a positive outcome.
I work within our 24/7 team and the shift patterns in this role suit me well because it allows me to make the most of my time off shift to go travelling, which is a big passion in my life, as well as exploring new places on my motorbike and spending time with friends.
